Sankofa Gumbo Inc

Sankofa Gumbo Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Amherst, Massachusetts, dedicated to celebrating, educating, and preserving the stories, foodways, and cultural traditions of African-descendant people both locally and globally. Founded in 2022, the organization focuses on sharing African American heritage and culture with all people in the Amherst. Sankofa Gumbo’s mission is rooted in the concept of “Sankofa,” an Akan word from Ghana meaning “go back and get it,” symbolizing the importance of learning from the past to build a
better future. The organization embodies this philosophy by organizing events and programs that honor and disseminate African American cultural traditions.
Key activities include:
• Hosting Annual Community Kwanzaa Celebrations
• Collaborating with collaborating with the Black Business Association of Amherst Area to present the Juneteenth Jubilee
• Engaging in Cultural Programming with community partners to promote cultural awareness and education.
